While all town officials throughout the county are urging caution and safety, towns are taking slightly different approaches to the children’s holiday. Only one town has prohibited trick-or- treating this year and that is Colerain, where leaders have decided to err on the side of caution. One other town - Powells ville - is strongly discourag ing trick-or-treating but said any church activities that al low children to pick up can dy safely will be encouraged. In Aulander, town officials have decided not to ban trick-or-treating, but are strongly discouraging the annual activity. Instead, the Great Pump kin is headed to Aulander to help the town’s young peo ple celebrate the holiday. The Great Pumpkin will be in Aulander on Saturday, Oct. 31 and will travel around the entire town. The Great Pumpkin will toss candy out to all the chil dren in the town. Times will be announced on the town’s Facebook page this week. Those wishing to continue with trick-or-treating are urged to stay in their neigh borhood and follow social distancing practices. Homes that choose to par- See TRICK-OR-TREAT, A5 Time left to run SKAValk aids food pantry MICHELLE LEICESTER Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The last day to sign up and complete the Virtual Spooktacu- lar 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is Saturday. Some participants have already posted their results. “The normal course for both the 5K and the 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk have has been marked. It starts on York street behind Windsor Town Hall near the utility building and finishes in front of Livermon Park and Mini Zoo,” said Race Director Joe Huff. Even though the course has been marked participants are not required to use that route and can run or walk from anywhere in cluding on a treadmill. This year the 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk are virtual due to COVID-19. Death toll is 20 COVID-19 cases on the rise THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance Bertie County lost its 20th resident to COV ID-19 last week. Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS) announced the death of the person who was over 65 years of age, and died due to compli cations from COVID-19. The death was not re lated to any facility out breaks. ARHS released no oth er details to protect the family’s privacy. Cases continue to rise in Bertie County, as the worldwide pandemic keeps growing. Bertie County now has 31 ac tive cases of the novel Coronavirus. There have been 724 total cases. Of the total, 673 have recovered. Bertie remains third among the ARHS ser vice region, following the 858 cases in Pasquo tank County (35 deaths) and 852 cases in neigh boring Hertford County (35 deaths). Roanoke Electric Coopera tive has started a pilot pro gram that allows the first 10 member-owners to sign up for the Electric Vehicle Rate to receive a free charging station, free installation and a $1,000 incentive. “As your local energy part ner, we are proud to join electric cooperatives across the state in announcing new sustainability goals,” said. Curtis Wynn, the co-op’s President and Chief Execu tive Officer (CEO). “We are working toward net-zero car bon emissions by 250 and a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2030. “EVs are becoming an important part of this mis sion,” he continued. “If you own an EV, we encourage you to consider charging at night and taking advantage of our special rate.” Estimates indicate that there are already more than 1 million electric vehicles used in the United States, and some expect that mark to climb as high as 18 million by 2030.
